Cancer in Men - Preserving Your Fertility After Cancer Treatment

Although it is preferable to attempt procedures to save your fertility before you begin cancer treatment, it may not be possible. Fast growing cancers (like acute leukemia) may leave you unable to collect and store a semen sample before starting cancer treatment. Also, some men may decide after cancer treatment is successful that they would like to begin the road to parenthood.

If you have already completed your cancer treatment, consult with your fertility doctors in Kansas City to discuss the affect on your sexual performance and fertility. The following options may be possible:

* Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE)- In TESE, your Kansas City fertility doctors remove a small portion of tissue from the testicles and any viable sperm cells are extracted for application in IVF-ICSI procedures. Can also be frozen for future use. This procedure can be used when the prostate and seminal vesicles have been removed.
* Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA)- Sperm is taken from the epididymis (the small, tightly coiled tubes where sperm cells ripen at the top of the testicles) for use in IVF-ICSI procedures. Like TESE, this procedure is also used when the prostate and seminal vesicles have been removed.
* Ephedrine Sulfate- The most common medicine used to restore normal emissions for men with retrograde ejaculation. Other sinus drugs and antidepressants can also be prescribed for this condition. However, this treatment is not successful for all men and may only work for a few doses. It is usually given only for the fertile phase of the woman's cycle.
* Separate live sperm cells- Another treatment for retrograde ejaculation is the retrieval of live sperm cells. Medicineis given to a man to make his urine less acidic, controlling the damage to his sperm. After climax, sperm cells are separated from the urine, processed in the laboratory, and used in infertility treatments.
* Electro-ejaculation- Used as a last resort to treat retrograde ejaculation. Under anesthesia, a special electrical probe is inserted into the anal canal and used to elicit an ejaculation of semen through the penis. Electro-ejaculation is rarely used since it can cause scar tissue to form.
* Donor Sperm- Men with permanent sterility may opt to use donor sperm (donor insemination) to become a parent.
